Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana) is a very popular yoga pose. It is practiced as a part of the Sun Salutations, and is common in other forms of yoga as well. It is known as a back bend, as well as a heart opener which can help fight fatigue, boost energy, and can help increase the mobility of the spine.

  • Lay face down on your mat, feet hip width apart.
  • Place your hands next to your shoulders, and begin to push up.
  • The tops of your feet will begin to press into the mat.
  • Roll your shoulders down your back as you lengthen your neck and upper spine.
  • Gaze is straight ahead of you.
  • You can rise up onto your fingertips when your arms are straight, if that is available. To leave this pose, simply lower your upper body to the mat, resting your head on the mat.
  • If this presents too much stress and compression on your lower back, come down to your elbows, keeping the forearms straight out in front of the body.  This is called  Sphinx  (Salamba Bhujangasana)
